Originally from Vancouver, BC, Martin Elfert has lived, studied, and worked up and down the West Coast - his license plate collection includes California, Washington, and Oregon. Raised without a church connection, Martin had a major God sighting during the birth of his first child and, thereafter, he wanted/needed a community, a set of stories and symbols, and a practice within which to respond to that experience. Thanks to being married to a P.K. (i.e., a Preacher’s Kid), Martin found his way to Vancouver’s Christ Church Cathedral, the community that would eventually encourage him to seek ordination. Since then, he has served as a priest at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, WA, and now at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Portland, OR. Martin is a proud alumnus of the University of British Columba, the Banff Centre for the Arts, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and the College for Congregational Development. He is a past recipient of the Bishop Millard Preaching Prize, the Beatitudes Society Brave Preacher Award, and the Grade One Perfect Attendance Award. He blogs from time to time at spokanefavs.com.
